<< there has been some activity around sydney recently ...
last weekend saw an event of talking and listening.. _- .audio ideas

and this week phill niblock visited ... giving two performances on thursday. \
his music is being re-listened to by an audience switched on
_by contemporary electronic audio. _
Niblock's work hasn't had much coverage,
like many working in and around the american avant-guarde of the
50¹s and 60¹s .
his name appears in the lists but beyond that.

difference tones and interference tones..
+.when asked to talk about the music beyond a description of the process
he suggests that it is for the listener to
hear the work for themselves and come to conclusions upon hearing.

..._ the performance....
the audience was again taken by the performance event even when there was little to see.
Niblock was hidden behind one of those wooden poles at artspace, his back tuned,
powerbook open..
.oren, david and julian sitting behind guitars lying on amp tables...
ebows playing tones which interact with the prerecorded tones of niblock's piece....
++phantom sounds appearing at different ranges...
electronic like ...the addition of one guitar adding a
multiple reaction from the work.
the piece finishes and the audience gets up and walks outside...the next piece (a cd playing through the pa)
becoming background music to their talk and cigarette smoking......concentration is short
(we saw that the week before at audio-ideas)....
and the audience still wants performance /spectacle, to see something is happening.
niblock wanders around, head down...seeming unsure of the whole thing
i wonder if this happens at all his performances.
