no.8 particles of sound I am sitting on the floor in someone's warehouse lounge. Down the end stand two people turning dials, twiddling knobs. Torben stands over Jasmine as she fits herself under him to tweak a level... I have said before that minit's(Jasmine Guffond and Torben Tilly) music has a nostalgic ring, a certain hollowness and that this nostalgia is perhaps a desire for space, for room. Except this is not a desire for the countryside, for wide open space but a desire for space within the confines of this city we find ourselves in. It is something in the air of minit's music, a quiet open scored effect. Listening to them play at Sound Particle #2 makes me see this even more. Unlike much music theirs creates pictures, images. I can't help but see scenes to go with the sound. This sound is miles from disembodied. Beats/pulses are pushed way back, effects cover them only letting them out in the gaps. And the effects... they jump in move around for a while then disappear... Maybe this roominess added something to the discomfort I saw while they played. People talked, moved around, were distracted, restless, unsettled... this was not the case when Size played... the audience was serious, stuck or walking out! I read somewhere recently that 'There's a time to talk and a time to listen..." P F E calEb k. |
