In its initial form at the Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney,
UT was an installation combining wall drawings, interactive sound,
computer speakers and a quill and drum interface. Spatial sound and content
were controlled by gestures made with the quill. Each iteration of UT
is site-specific.
UT features experimental forms of musical technology from the turn of
the last millennium, produced now through innovative sound technology
of today.
Joan Grounds and Stevie Wishart have created a work, inspired
by the medieval monk Guido of Arezzo's visualisation of sound,
mapping his divisions of the musical scale on the human hand. This system
is still used as the basis of contemporary musical notation.
